A Birthday Problem (Posted on 2007-02-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
When Mr. Grimsby asked Mr. Fleming his age on a certain day in the current century, Mr. Fleming responded cryptically, "Today's day of the month corresponds to my age in years. My birthday will occur before this week is over, and then, the day of the month will precisely correspond to one fifth of my new age."

When is the most recent date in which this could have happened?

The birthday (call it "B") must be the 6th of the month, otherwise (5B-1) occurs far too early in the month. With at least 5 days between "today" and B, "today" (5B-1=30-1=29) must be Sunday, and B must be Saturday.

That means that the birthday is March 6, and "today is Sunday February 29, 2004.
