The width:height ratio of a television screens is changing from the traditional 4:3 to the widescreen 16:9. If a traditional screen and a widescreen have the same area, then what is the ratio widescreen width:traditional width (Assume that television screens are rectangles).
Let the respective width and the height of the traditional screens be 4x and 3x; while the respective width and the height of the wide screens be 16y and 9y.
Then, by conditions of the problem:
Area (Traditional Screens) = Area (Wide Screens)
Or, 4x*3x = 16y*9y
Or, x^2/y^2 = 12, giving x/y = 2 *sqrt(3), so that:
Width (Wide Screen)/ Width (Traditional Screen)
= (16y)/(4x)
= 4/(x/y)
= 2/ sqrt(3)
= 1.15470054/1
