Serves me right for using Wikipedia. According to the following
Wikipedia link. The titles are synonymous. Rachel Jackson, Hannah Van Buren and Ellen Arthur are left out of this list. All died beofre their husband's took office. However they are recognized by the National First Ladies Library
here. They are also recognized at the Whitehouse.gov website. Both the NFLL and whitehouse.gov recognize Harriet Lane niece to president James Buchanan (to whom my children are distantly related by the way) as First Lady. Although neither NFLL or whitehouse.gov seems to offer a definition of First Lady, They seem to define it primarily as the wife of the president. (With Harriet Lane as the exception). The NFLL does not recognize Sarah York Jackson, Emily Donelson, Angelica Van Buren, Jane Harrison, Priscilla Tyler, Rose Cleveland, and Mary Harrison McKee which my list includes. Again, serves me right for using Wikipedia.
