You can verify how the buttons work by clicking on them. They indeed work the way you describe, with wrap-around.
Since the diagram is an actual functional device, if you want to start over fresh, just click on the R. It will have no function for the final solution--it's just there so you can practice your solution from the original board after having messed it up with previous trials.
