Examining the source, the largest "x" value used is 450!
I see no difference in the table width definitions for the three columns (the first column being the puzzle and comments, the second column being the login-profile links-search-problem links-chatterbox, and the third column ad-banner-links), yet the first column and third column are of different widths between the dots fitting to those that extend beyond the first column. I suspect it may have to do with how the comments list is different than the comments. In the comments view it seems to be set up that they are sometimes permitted to stretch the first column's width, and thus shrink the third column's relative width.
