The numerals represent letters from the English alphabet, and the title is about the best hint I can give.

What are the 8 words, 4 across, 4 down?
(In reply to
re: a possible solution by brianjn)
The method used to fill the grid was trial and error mixed with educated guesswork (and access to a dictionary).
Another eight words that fit the grid (corresponding to the distinctness of the numbers in the grid, not to their actual representation*) are: GOUT, GOWN, NEXT, OGLE, OGRE, TENT, ULEX, and WREN. Yet, ULEX, the name of the genus of the Eurasian spiny shrub, the gorse, would not be considered a common English word. Hence, I bypassed the following grid as the sought for solution:
G O W N
O G R E
U L E X
T E N T
*For the above to have been a valid solution to this puzzle, U would have been represented by 288 and X by 17. This, of course, would also have required the less than common word, ULEX.
