AutoHomophone (Posted on 2011-03-22) Difficulty: 3 of 5
What's a 5-letter, 1-syllable word, that if you removed either of the first two letters (but not both), you'd end up with a homophone of the original word?

Solution consonant clusters | Comment 1 of 4
Considering the range of consonant clusters available in English the only grouping which I can manage when either of a pair is removed, and will still provide the initial sound is "SC".

That grouping however provides a difficulty unless the "C" is followed by an "E".

SCE ....
"scene" seemed a logical start.

With a bit of P&P (pencil and paper) I had arrived at:
SCENT
SENT
CENT
