After having no luck doing just vertical shifts, it occurs to me it wouldn't be a D4 if the message appeared horizontally so easily.
Perhaps it appears vertically, maybe in a boustrophedon. If so, it should be easy enough with just 6 horizontal shifts to find a message.
But I had no luck with that either.
Now, I have to concede the message is perhaps in a substitution cipher, or is read diagonally, or else I'm missing something.
I'm going to try diagonally first, since combining shifting with substitution ciphering would be too much work.
