Double Letters at the Front (Posted on 2005-07-11) Difficulty: 1 of 5
There are a number of common words in the English language which start with a double letter, such as ooze and eerie, but these start with vowels.

Can you think of a common word in the English language which starts with a double consonant?

Excluding the following interjections...
mm : used to express contentment, thought or reflection
ssh: used for telling someone to stop talking or making noise (variant spelling to sh and shh)
zzz: used as an expression of sleeping or snoring
... the common double-consonant beginning English words are:
llama (llamas): a large South American animal with a long neck and thick coat
llano (llanos): an extensive grassy and nearly treeless plain (especially in South America
llanero (llaneros): a plainsman; a South American cowboy or cattle-herder

There are also double-consonant English words derived from abbreviations, such as BB (BBs) and BB gun (BB guns).
