Tennis Tease (Posted on 2013-03-28) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Evelyn, her brother, her daughter and her son are tennis players.
As a game of doubles is about to begin.
  1. Evelyn's brother is directly across the net from her daughter.
  2. Evelyn’s son is diagonally across the net from the worst player's sibling.
  3. The best player and the worst player are on the same side of the net.
Who is the best player?

answer Comment 2 of 2 |

If one interprets "directly across" to mean the shortest path between two points on opposing sides of some divisional line or area, then given the rules of initial positioning in tennis doubles (assuming the players followed the rules) where the server and initial receiver stand diagonally opposite at the furthest points (with the server standing beyond the baseline), then the best player would be either Evelyn's son or Evelyn and the worst player would be Evelyn's brother.

Inferring "directly across" to mean "orthogonally across", then Evelyn's brother would be the best player and Evelyn would be the worst player. As the latter interpretation is the one that provides an identifiable answer to who is the best player, the implication would be Evelyn's brother is the best player.
