Fit 9 distinct letters into the array to form 20 5-letter words such that all having a vertical orientation (including diagonals) are read from top-down and horizontal words are read from left to right.
Any pair of words may share the first letter, the last letter, or the first and last from each other.
I have found only one word fitting
-heg - namely
thegn (=thane)
and, starting from there got a quasi-solution":
upper line , add the letters C D Y,
mid. line -add the letters H T N,
lowest - add the letters M R L,
you get 19 valid words and a meaningless COUCT (1st upper left
quadrant).
I understand that my 1st assumption was wrong and there are probably additional words fitting -heg-.
Looking up the Scrabble 4,000,000-word DB I discovered 8 or 9
adequate words to start with but was too tired (or too lazy) to continue exploring more threads.
I believe that in similar puzzles the author should specify what
word base is assumed as a reference and which words are precluded.
