House Assignment (Posted on 2014-03-18) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Five friends, Adolfo, Brice, Chet, Del, and Evan have summer houses along the coast.

Each wanted to name his house after the daughter of one of his friends that is: Adela, Briana, Cayla, Diane, and Elaine (albeit, not necessarily in that order).

To be sure that their houses would have different names, the friends met to make their choices together.
  1. Chet and Brice both wanted to name their house Diane. They drew lots and Brice won. Chet named his house Adela.
  2. Adolfo named his house Briana.
  3. Elaine's father had not come to the meeting, and Evan phoned him to tell him to name his house Cayla.
  4. Briana's father named his house Elaine.
What is the name of each friend's daughter? What is the name of each friend's house?

Solution Solution Comment 1 of 1

The Houses:

From 1, Bret named his house Diane, and Chet named his house Adela.

From 2, Adolfo named his house Briana.

From 3, Even didn't name his house Cayla.  Therefore Del named his house Cayla, and Evan named his house Elaine.

The Daughters:

From 3, Del is the father of Elaine.

From 4, Evan is the father of Briana.

From 1, neither Chet nor Brice is the father of Diane.  Thus Adolfo is the father of Diane.

From 1, Chet is not the father of Adela.  Thus Brice is the father of Adela, and Chet is the father of Cayla.
