Extending tic-tac-toe (Posted on 2014-10-23) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In a standard 3x3 tic-ta-toe there are 8 distinct possibilities to create “three in a row”- 3 horizontal, 3 vertical and 2 diagonal.

How many ways are there in a three-dimensional 5x5x5 tic-tac-toe?

How about 6x6x6 ?

Solution 6x6x6 solution | Comment 3 of 6 |
It turns out the method for 5x5x5 can very easily be extended to 6x6x6.  The numbers are the same, there are just more.
Layers 1,2,5,6 each total 356
Layers 3,4 each total 552
Total of layers 2528
Half of this 1264

It should be easy to give a general formula from here.
