Prize, prise, and
pries are each alternate spellings of each other, having the same pronunciation, with the meaning of the verb
levers (up) [From dialect prise "lever" < Old French prise "grasp, taking hold"].
In addition to both the verb and noun for lever, the spelling
prize is also a word [From Old French prise "taking hold (of booty)"] for highly valued, a reward, and
bounty which in general pronunciation of modern English has the same pronunciation.
There are then at least two solutions to the problem:
(1) pries and
prize
(2) prise and
prize
