Some Thoughts Etymologically, the same root Comment 2 of 2 |
Prize, prise, and pries are each alternate spellings of each other, having the same pronunciation, with the meaning of the verb
levers (up)
[From dialect prise "lever" < Old French prise "grasp, taking hold"].

In addition to both the verb and noun for lever, the spelling prize is also a word [From Old French prise "taking hold (of booty)"] for highly valued, a reward, and bounty which in general pronunciation of modern English has the same pronunciation.

There are then at least two solutions to the problem:
(1) pries and prize
(2) prise
and prize
