Ahoy! (spoiler) by Steve Herman)
Both tanker and galley are ships.
Launch, sampan, and basket are boats.
A launch (boat) historically was the largest boat carried by a sailing ship. In modern times, the launch boat is usually an open motorboat.
The sampan is a flat-bottomed Chinese wooden boat. The boat is usually propelled by poles or oars, but may also be motorized.
The basket (boat) is commonly seen along the coastline of Viet Nam. The basket boat is also known as a surf boat. Some of these are motorized and some are masted with sails.
Unless NUCHAL, BETASK, and SPAMAN are to be anagrammed differently, and into words that are ships and not boats, the three letter-strings can be identified as being 'not an anagram of a type of ship'.
"All ships are large boats, but not all boats are ships."
"When a ship sinks you get in a boat, when a boat sinks you get in the water."
