An anamonic is a form of mnemonic device frequently employed by tournament Scrabble players (the word anamonic is itself a portmanteau of
anagram and mne
monic ).
It consists of a six or seven letter "stem" (often, but not always, an acceptable word itself), paired with a phrase in which each letter can be added to the stem and rearranged (anagrammed) to form a new word.
Example:Example anamonic (North American word list)
TSUNAMI: COASTAL HARM
TSUNAMI+C = TSUNAMIC
TSUNAMI+O = MANITOUS, TINAMOUS
TSUNAMI+A = AMIANTUS
TSUNAMI+S = TSUNAMIS
TSUNAMI+T = ANTISMUT
TSUNAMI+L = SIMULANT
TSUNAMI+H = HUMANIST
TSUNAMI+R = NATRIUMS, NATURISM
TSUNAMI+M = MANUMITS
A successful anamonic (as in the above example) will typically have a phrase with some memorable semantic relationship to the stem.
a. Please suggest some suitable phrases to match the following stems: NATURE, SENIOR, WAITER.
b. Create some new anamonics.
(World English word list [CSW12]
)

(North American English [TWL06] eliminates the words permitted by the letters of MAW, thus would require a different anamonic. This may not be true with later versions of the TWL, and the given anamonic may not be valid for the latest or later versions of the CSW.)
