There is a possibility for several answers...
That is, an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos, had someone asked "If Y-E-S spells 'yes', what does E-Y-E-S spell?" Of course the question and answer have one answer to this puzzle.
The alternative takes the A in the original puzzle literally:
A + YES = ayes, the plural of a synonym for the same word.
