Where The Smoke Blows (Posted on 2003-06-20) Difficulty: 2 of 5
An electric passenger train goes at 73 km/h in the direction of south east. A wind is blowing from the south at 31 km/h.

What is the direction that the smoke from the train is blowing and at what speed?

I understand what you say, which is exactly what you would do to plot your true position when sailing into a tide.
My point was that the smoke would not itself be moving forward at all to set against the wind speed. Vector triangles do not therefore appear relevant.
I'm being a bit pedantic I know, but that's what these puzzles seem to be all about and thus, good fun.
Thanks.
