Another True Story (Posted on 2018-05-22) Difficulty: 2 of 5

I bought some merchandise with a ticket price of $429. However there was a 15% holiday discount, so I actually paid less than that.

The next day, I needed to exchange the merchandise, so I chose other items with a ticket price of $439, and the same discount. Just $10 more, so after the discount I needed to pay an additional $8.50, right?

Wrong. I had to pay an additional $9.

On checking the bill, I was quickly able to confirm that there was no error in the shop's calculation.

What is the explanation?

The store must be giving the customer the benefit of rounding their discount up to the next exact dollar.

A 15% discount on $429 would make the price 364.65, but with the discount rounded up, the discounted price is rounded down, to $364.

The next day, exactly 15% off $439 would have been 373.15, but rounding the discount up and the discounted price down, brings the amount due to $373, nine dollars more than the day before.
