The first letters, read downward, spell Newcastle, and the last letters, read upward, spell Coal Mines.
While "a town in North America" was the fourth clue in the original, it's the third in Ady's version, but of course Washington fits it also.
That requires us to find a city in Italy (not the original wording but capitalized in the present puzzle) that begins with C and ends in I. I can think of an island (Capri). Consulting Google I find Carpi is the 80th largest city in Italy. I think the island is more famous.
Ecliptic has an unusual clue, as the ecliptic is a circle on the celestial sphere rather than the earth's surface. I do have an old globe (terrestrial) that does show an ecliptic line, tangent to the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn at antipodal points, but its location relative to the earth's surface is accurate only once per sidereal day as the earth and celestial sphere rotate relative to one another in that period of time.
