I think even now, I'd be hard pressed to prove the statements about the cases. But I'd not been able to formulate such generalizations. In playing around with diagrams there seemed to be too many possibilities, and I'd have to expand my diagrams beyond what I considered reasonable to come up with any general parity rules.
In the current situation I also did not know beforehand there must have been an even number of hypotenuses crossed (reflected from).
