No Heron (Posted on 2019-02-22) Difficulty: 2 of 5
What is the area of triangle of side length √146, √185 and √113?

Do not use Heron's formula to evaluate the area.

This turned out to be easier than Heron's formula because I didn't have to keep careful track of all the square roots:

Use the law of cosines to find an angle, then use the sine formula for the area.

cos(c)=(146+185-113)/(2*√146*√185)=109/√27010

sin(c)=123/√27010

Area = .5*√146*√185*sin(c)=.5*123=61.5
