As is my wont I wished to do a computer solution. My first obstacle was that the Wikipedia article List of rivers of the United States, was divided into links to subsets, either letters of the alphabet or states of the U.S. (you could follow links either way).
I first tried ParseHub, touted as a crawler for websites. But that worked horribly at understanding what I needed. HTTrack website copier worked much better, bringing me all the links from the main page, from which I could extract what I wanted via program.
I concatenated the files for letter A through that for XYZ into one file using a command prompt command COPY list* riversall.txt. I then used the SPFLite Editor to delete any lines that did not have <li> starting in column 1 or did not have title= at all.
After than I ran the following program to list all those cases where the first word after title= and a quote mark had no other vowel except A, as "River" or "Creek", etc. should not be counted as disqualifying.
Open "riversall.txt" For Input As #1
Do
Line Input #1, l$
ix = InStr(l, "title=" + Chr(34))
If ix > 0 Then
ix2 = InStr(ix + 7, l, Chr(34))
n$ = Mid(l, ix + 7, ix2 - ix - 7)
good = 1
ix = InStr(n, " ")
If ix > 0 Then
n2$ = Left(n, ix - 1)
Else
n2 = n
End If
For i = 1 To Len(n2)
If InStr("eiou", Mid(n2, i, 1)) > 0 Then good = 0: Exit For
Next
If good Then
Text1.Text = Text1.Text & n & crlf
End If
End If
DoEvents
Loop Until EOF(1)
Close 1
As you can see, the raw output included rivers with multi-word names where the second word might have non-allowed vowels, possibly even hidden by an abbreviated St. for Saint.:
