flak - Fliegerabwehrkanone (anti-aircraft fire, like ack-ack), but figuratively meaning to pelt someone's pelt with hostile criticism. (As the Brits say it nicely, to give one stick).
a flack - publicity agent.
to flack - promote, as in a product.
