There are other theories that work up to the question mark, but then fail thereafter. My own such theory was that you took the GCD between the number on the left and the number above and multiplied by the difference between the non-common factors, but that fails just at the question mark.
Maybe he considered it a masterpiece because of all the theories that work up to the ?, but then fail, leaving only Ady's answer.
