No objection to the closest neighbor to USA being Russia, with Russia's Big Diomede and USA's Little Diomede being islands in the Bering Strait having a distance apart of 2.4 miles.
But to one of the contiguous States, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, I believe is the winner. Though Cuba is a neighbor at 90 miles from Key West, Florida, the westernmost island of the Bahamas, Bimini, is closer with it being 53 miles from Miami, Florida.
Given the dictionary definition that a country is an expanse of land that has its own government, there may be one of First Nations in Canada who has no border that crosses or is adjacent to any US border that is as close or closer than the 53 miles.
