A Family Gathering (Posted on 2004-03-31) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Four people are sitting around a campfire after a long day of recreation, when one man comments: "Do you realize that around this campfire, the four of us include a mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle and a couple of cousins"?.
If everyone is related by blood (with no unusual marriages) how is this possible?

Solution Explanation for Puzzle Answer Comment 13 of 13 |
(In reply to Puzzle Answer by K Sengupta)

We will now explain the logic behind the short anser.
We assume that S is M's son and, D is W's daughter.
Then, we observe that:
W is D's mother, M is S' father, M is W's brother, W is M's sister, S is M's son, D is W's daughter, D is M's niece, S is W's nephew, W is S' aunt, W is D's aunt, M is D's uncle, and S and D are cousins of each other.
The man who is speaking must be M.
This is in consonance  with the provisions of the given puzzle.

*** Similarly, considering S as W's son and D as M's daughter we would have a similar set of relationships.
