Ryan bought some termites and put them in a suitably ventilated jar. He gave them some leaves to eat that contained important elements that termites need to live on.
After some days he noticed that many were dying. Ryan was very sad.
Can you help him by telling him what was wrong with his termites?
First - yes, you
can buy termites. Second - they can live on
decaying plants, not just wood. Third, while the soldiers do live less long than the workers, the lifespan of each is one to two years, and the queen can live decades. (In a colony absent a queen and her pheromones, a new queen will spontaneously arise.)
Aside from this, they do need to stay warm, moist, and in a mold-free environment. Having done all that, I am not sure where Ryan went wrong. He should read
this.
Some queens can live for 50 years!
