My views are in full conformity with Larry's solution which states that Big Diomonde Island (Russian Federation) and Little Diomonde Islands (Alaska, USA) are separated by about 2.5 miles and, consequently the country closest to USA without sharing a land border is the Russian Federation.
However, I was deeply shocked and pained to see this very interesting puzzle receive a mere D1 rating. I tried to bring up the rating as much as possible.
