The scoreboard at a major tournament became jumbled, with some letters being replaced by numbers.
At one point, the following appeared:
3EPO 1.5
F2B4 1.5
1U12 1.0
143G 0.5
Who was participating, and where are they playing?
We assume that each of the 4-length character strings appearing before the scores denote 4-letter short form of the name of a given player in the tournament.
After some trial and error, we arrive at this number to letter assignment as follows:
1 2 3 4
D A N I
so that:
3EPO --> NEPO
F2B4 --> FABI
1U12 --> DUDA
143G --> DING
Now, we know that:
=> IAN ALEXANDROVICH NEPOMNIACHTCHI is a Russian Chess Grandmaster, , who is often referred to by his nickname "NEPO"
==> FABIANO LUIGI CARUANA is an Italian-American Chess player. who is often referred to as "FABI".
==> JAN-KRZYSTOF DUDA is a Polish Chess Grandmaster.
==> DING LAREN is a Chinese Chess Grandmaster.
• Accordingly, these are the NAMES of the 4 PLAYERS participating in a major chess tournament.
Also, each of the foregoing chess players appear regularly in chess championships/ tournaments organized by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs).
We are aware that FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, 2022 is currently being held from June 16 to July 7 at Palacio de Santoña in Madrid, Spain.
• Consequently, the 4 players are playing at "Palacio de Santoña" in Madrid, Spain.
