How come?
My first 2 comments were done as hints, giving more examples.
Take the first letter of the number inside the box and concatenate the letters to spell out the number in the box to the right of the equal sign.
One Nine Eight --> ONE
Two Eight Nine --> TEN
And in my examples (prior comments):
Nine One Nine Eight --> NONE
Eight --> e
Nine i Nine Eight --> NINE
