But you have a point: In principle, it is true that one can not play a duration shorter than a wavelength, since a compression followed by a rarefaction duration defines a wavelength. But, while sound has a set speed in a given medium, there is no limit to how short a wavelength can be, down to the scale of the size of the molecules being compressed.
Also, a singlet wave can be played (well, ... can be made) - this is a soliton. More of a snap than a note.
