For what values of
awill the set of equations:
x2 + y2 = 4 + 2ax - a2
x2 = y2
have 4 distinct solutions?
It would seem that the thing preventing four distinct solutions would be the presence of x on the right hand side. The only way to get rid of that presence is to make a zero.
When a is zero the solutions are of course (sqrt(2),sqrt(2)), (sqrt(2),-sqrt(2)), (-sqrt(2),sqrt(2)), (-sqrt(2),-sqrt(2)).
