For what values of a
will the set of equations:

x2 + y2 = 4 + 2ax - a2
x2 = y2

have 4 distinct solutions?

It would seem that the thing preventing four distinct solutions would be the presence of x on the right hand side. The only way to get rid of that presence is to make a zero.

When a is zero the solutions are of course (sqrt(2),sqrt(2)), (sqrt(2),-sqrt(2)), (-sqrt(2),sqrt(2)), (-sqrt(2),-sqrt(2)).
