The overlap of two unit squares is a rectangle with area 1/16.

Find the minimum distance between their centers.

Putting the distance equation into Desmos to see the graph of distance vs vertical shift shows that the diagonal case which showed a distance of (3/4)√2 was actually the maximum distance.
