A father and his son are skating around a circular skating rink. From time to time, the father overtakes the son. After the son starts skating in the opposite direction, they begin to meet five times more often. What is the ratio of the skating speeds of the father and the son?

I'll start with the assumption that "five times more often" means "six times as often". (See

a + b = 6 * (a - b)

7*b = 5*a

a/b = 7/5

This is the logical interpretation.

On the other interpretation (more prevalent in the public mind it seems), if "five times more often" means "five times as often":

a + b = 5 * (a - b)

6*b = 4*a

a/b = 6/4 = 3/2
