Consider the sequence 1, 7, 8, 49, 50, 56, 57, 343, ... which consists of sums of distinct powers of 7, that is, 70, 71, 70+71, 72, ... in increasing order. At what position will 16856 occur in this sequence?

It seems easier to first convert 16856 to base 7.

16856 = 100100 (base 7)
100100 (base 2) = 36, so 36th position.
