Coin fitting (Posted on 2025-04-23) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Coins of diameter 1 have been placed in a square of side 11, without overlapping or protruding from the square. Can there be 126 coins? and 127? and 128?

Solution 128 | Comment 3 of 5 |
Remove another row of 10 and replace with 11.

There isn't room to do this one more time.  If a greater number of circles than than 128 is possible, it will require another trick.  There are still 4 offset rows, which can fit 8 half-circles.  It's possible that with some jiggling, we can do even better.
