What do the following words have in common?

spy, babe, tree, wavy, skate, loyal, steep, ponder

The one thing these words have in common is that.....they all appear in this puzzle!


(I never was good at these kinds of puzzles anyway...)

Seriously, the only thing I've been able to think of is "line" as in

tree line (timberline)
wavy lines
inline skates
loyal = "tow the line"
steep = incline

but even stretching things that far I can't get anywhere with spy, babe, or ponder....
