Simultaneous Settlement VI (Posted on 2022-12-17) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Without solving for x and y, determine the possible values of x/y, whenever:
             x+y=29, and:
             x*y=198

Solution: (Hide)
x+y=29 .....(i)
x*y=198.....(ii)
Dividing (i) by (ii), we have:
1/x+1/y = 29/198 ......(iii)
Multiplying (i) by (iii), we have:
2+x/y +y /x = 841/198
Substituting p=x/y, we have:
p+1/p = 645/198
=> 198*p^2 - 445p+ 198 =0
=> (18p-11)(11p-18) =0
=> p = 11/18, or 18/11
