The test of the suits (Posted on 2005-06-07) |
|
An engineer must test three space suits in two test chambers. Each suit must be tested for 1 hour at each of two pressures.
He takes 10 minutes to load a suit in a chamber, set the pressure, and start the test; 4 minutes to change the pressure in the chamber; and 10 minutes to unload a suit from a chamber.
Knowing that each chamber could contain only one suit at once, and since he can only do one load/unload at a time, can he manage to test the suits in less than 4 hours ?

1) Load suit A into 1st chamber...10 minutes. 2) Load suit B into 2nd chamber...+10 minutes. 3) Wait 50 minutes (Suit A is already tested in one pressure)...+50 minutes. 4) Change pressure in 1st chamber, to start the test of suit A in other pressure...+4 minutes. 5) Wait 6 minutes (Suit B is already tested in one pressure)...+6 minutes. 6) Unload suit B from 2nd chamber...+10 minutes. 7) Load suit C into 2nd chamber...+10 minutes. 8) Wait 34 minutes (suit A is already tested in the other pressure)...+34 minutes. 9) Unload suit A from 1st chamber...+10 minutes. 10) Load suit B into 1st chamber...+10 minutes. 11) Wait 6 minutes (suit C is already tested in one pressure)...+6 minutes. 12) Change pressure in 2nd chamber...+4 minutes. 13) Wait 50 minutes (suit B is already tested in the other pressure)...+50 minutes. 14) Unload suit B from 1st chamber...+10 minutes. 15) Unload suit C from 2nd chamber (suit C is already tested in the other pressure)...+10 minutes.
TOTAL : 234 minutes, or 3 hours and 54 minutes.
