Three Tests, Take Three! (Posted on 2005-06-23) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You have nine brass rings, but three are actually gold. Can you pick these out using a balance scale three times at the most?

No, you can't. There are 84 ways of picking three rings out of nine. A scale can give three results (left heavier, right heavier, equal) so three times can differentiate among 27 results; it's no good, but 5 times could do.
