Definition of Cryptography (Posted on 2005-10-13) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Cryptography n:-

The practise and study of encryption and decryption - encoding data so that it can only be decoded by specific individuals.

A system for encrypting and decrypting data is a cryptosystem.
These usually involve an algorithm for combining the original data ("plaintext") with one or more "keys" - numbers or strings of characters known only to the sender and/or recipient.

The resulting output iz known as "ciphertext".

No-one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No-one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Richard Burton's opening speech from H.G.Wells' War of the Worlds.

Firstly, give each word a number

1Cryptography 2n 3The 4practise 5and 6study 7of 8encryption 9and 10decryption – 11encoding 12data 13so 14that 15it 16can 17only 18be 19decoded 20by 21specific 22individuals. 23A 24system 25for 26encrypting 27and 28decrypting 29data 30is 31a 32cryptosystem. 33These 34usually 35involve 36an 37algorithm 38for 39combining 40the 41original 42data 43("plaintext") 44with 45one 46or 47more 48"keys" – 49numbers 50or 51strings 52of 53characters 54known 55only 56to 57the 58sender 59and/ 60or 61recipient. 62The 63resulting 64output 65iz 66known 67as 68"ciphertext".

Each letter in that word is then given a number.eg.
53 1c 2h 3a 4r 5a 6c 7t 8e 9r 10s

Then, Concatenate the word number with the letter number to give the cipher text.eg.
536,535,537,5310 = cats

There was no "z" in the clue, so I had to use is, spelt iz (652) to get the right letter..... .....Sorry.
