Five Squares (Posted on 2007-04-18) Difficulty: 3 of 5
This array of base 10 digits, read from left to right and top-down, contains 4 square numbers. The fifth numeral is as close as possible to another square.

     d e f

The unit digits of the squares of 36, 49 and 81 can be arranged to create the squares 169 (13), 196 (14) and 961 (31).

These arrangements result in a fifth digit having the values of 438, 834 and 843.

438 + 3 = 441 (21)
834 + 7 = 841 (29)
843 - 2 = 841 (29)

My array is therefore:

8 4 3
1 9 6
