Ryan bought some termites and put them in a suitably ventilated jar. He gave them some leaves to eat that contained important elements that termites need to live on.
After some days he noticed that many were dying. Ryan was very sad.
Can you help him by telling him what was wrong with his termites?

There are may kinds of termites, but I don't know of any that eat leaves.

In the US, termites are known for eating wood, especially wood that has been softened by dry rot fungus.

Mound building termites grow fungus for food by bringing decaying plant material which foragers bring back to the colony.

Leaves may contain important elements like hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. These are essential to human and termites. Neither can live on, for example, fresh maple leaves.
