The pattern I found was that each eight letter word contains three distinct pairs of letters
that are sequential in the alphabet.
I wrote a program to look for such words and it found 2366, so if I have the full criteria,
such words are not so rare.
The code also found 32 words that had 4 such pairs (i.e. all the letters were in such pairs).

Could be FRESHMAN or FRESHMEN, but also
armbands, backstop, bandsmen, bonehead, butthead, debaters. These all work.

HYDROGEN (also THALLIUM)

Could be SPHENOID or SCAPHOID (these are small) or mandible
