During normal speech, our words tend to slur together. When the question in this puzzle is spoken aloud quickly, it sounds like, “Why did the chicken cross the road?”. The standard answer is C, “To get to the other side,” although the number of spoof answers, such as the one approximated by answer A, is countless.

This puzzle was inspired by the story “Ladle Rat Rotten Hut”, a retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood” told entirely using words that sound similar to the original. The story was written in 1941 by H.L. Chase, who was himself inspired by the rationing of just about everything during WWII. He wondered what language would be like if words themselves were rationed, and we had to communicate using whatever words were made available to us.
