Black And Brown Gloves (Posted on 2004-10-06) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Mr. Blue has 12 brown gloves and 8 black gloves in a drawer in his closet. If he blindly pulls gloves from the drawer, what's the minimum number of gloves Mr. Blue will have to pick, to be certain he has a pair of gloves of the same color?

If you interpret the problem to require a wearable pair, consisting of a left and a right, then I think 11 is a better answer than 3.

However, the first line says "12 brown gloves and 8 black gloves" and mentions nothing about pairs.

So I believe the answer is he will never be certain to get a pair, since the drawer could have 20 left handed gloves.
