The position below was achieved in a normal chess game, and there are no other pieces left on the board with the exception of the white King. Where is the white King? How was this position achieved?

This puzzle appears on the cover of Raymond Smullyan's excellent book "The Chess Mysteries of the Arabian Knights", his second book of puzzles in retrograde analysis. I don't know, however, if it is one of Smullyan's own or if it first appeared elsewhere.
