Where is the White King? (Posted on 2005-08-05) Difficulty: 3 of 5
The position below was achieved in a normal chess game, and there are no other pieces left on the board with the exception of the white King. Where is the white King? How was this position achieved?

Black

White

The white King is at c3.  Two moves back there was a black pawn at b4, a white pawn at c2.  The white king was at b3, and the black bishop was somewhere else on the a8-h1 diagonal (not on d5, where it is now).  The last few moves were:

White     Black
...          B-d5 ch
c2-c4     b4xc3 e.p. dbl-ch
Kxc3ch

Nice puzzle, pc!
