The hired man (Posted on 2005-12-19) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Alden, Brent, Craig and David applied for a job that required the applicant:

- to be a high school graduate.
- to have at least two years of previous work.
- to be a veteran.
- to have satisfactory references.

One of them, who met more of the requirements than any of the others, was hired.

1) Each of the six possible pairs of requirements was met by exactly one man.
2) Alden and Brent are high school graduate.
3) Craig and David have at least two years of previous work.
4) Brent and Craig were both veterans.
5) David had satisfactory references.

Who was hired?

Brent was hired.

Since the person hired needs to have more requirements than the others, he needs to have 3 or 4 of the 4 requirements.  And according to the 1st fact no one has the same pair of requirements as another so the one who was hired could not have all four requirements.

Craig has experience and is a veteran.  To be hired he needs a 3rd requirment.  If craig also had High School, then he'd have the same pair of requirements as Brent who has High School and is a veteran, and that violates 1).  If Craig also had references then he'd have the same as David and that violates 1).  Therefore Craig is not the one who was hired.

With the same type of reasoning, Alden also is not the one who was hired.

David cannot be a vetern but he could have high school which would give him enough to be hired.  But Brent, who cannot have experience could have references so he too could be the one who was hired.

But if we look back at 1) we need to make sure all six pairs of requirements are met.  With the above solutions for Brent and David, one pair is not met.  The only person who fill in the blank for us is Alden by having one more requirement.  If David is hired, then the left over pair is veteran and References but Alden cannot satisfy that unless he gets two more requirements since he only has High School.  But if Brent is hired, then the left over pair is High School and 2 yrs experience, which Alden can fulfill by also having experience.

So everyone was the requirements mentioned in the question but Alden also has experience and Brent also has Satisfactory references and therefore Brent is the one who gets hired.
